Societal expectations are standards that society creates that categorize everyone into boxes. Because of these standards people try so hard to meet them. Society is so corrupt; making people do certain things, think a certain way, and not allowing them to follow their gut feeling or morals just so they won't be an outsider. During the time period of the Gilded Age and when the book the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, there was not much diversity acceptance. The Gilded Age was created for certain people to succeed and of course those people were the wealthy ones. And in the book it shows how they did not appreciate diversity; they wanted everyone to act a certain way (be civilized). The diversity standard means that we are able to recognize the importance of diversity. By doing so we will be able to make good choices, achieving a bright future, and start to receive leadership skills such as communication, collaboration, and self-reflection. This CTRA magnet standard relates to my topic societal expectations, the Gilded Age, and the book because diversity is a mixture of different things in an area or community. Back then all women were expected to be a certain way and do certain things such as staying home, raise and take care of their families regardless. They were not expected to maintain jobs or do things outside of the norm. Society says the people at the bottom do not have what it takes for them to be on 'top'. They make it seem like people are the problem when the way society and us are set up is the problem. There are social expectations til this day. Women, the poor, Irish, blacks, did not have equality and we still do not; that is not justice. People are blind to the injustice.
