This source is a website with many different articles on the new advances for women. It relates to the topic of societal expectations because this website talked about events from the time around the gilded age. It describes the things that happened back then like women’s expectations back then. The first thing that caught my attention was that women were trying to expand their duties around the house, at first it was not easy arranging to new things, but that is what they wanted. This source also said that women were seen as people who took care of their families and nothing else. Back then there were social bubbles for men and women which separated them on a daily schedule. I also learned that the life of women was bound to change; if fashion expanded so would their lives. It also mentioned that during this time women had expectations and limits they had to live b, but most women were beginning to think outside the box and wanting to challenge that. Society was trying to tell women what they could and can not do, but soon they realized society is not always right and the only thing that can stop them is their abilities. This related to Huckleberry Finn because in that book all the characters were meant to symbolize expectations back then and society. Til this day, everyone has expectations they should live by, but deep down they know it is not right thing to do.

This source is an article that talks about the daily life of a women back then. It relates to my topic for the project because it talks about the expectations women had back then and their daily life. There were four things that really stood out to me. One thing was that women would do back then is use everything they could for their advantage. They were able to show people their cooking skills, give foreigners lessons on the language English, and tips on how to adapt. Another thing this source told me that most women had an education and they felt they need to use their brain. Soon enough they transferred from staying at home to being able to work jobs. The last thing that stood out was that women believed that society was corrupt because of alcohol. This relates to Huckleberry Finn because the widow douglas and miss Watson would try to ‘civilize’ Huck. They represent society and how they influence you in your actions and thoughts. Then this relates to today because everyone has expectations that society sets up for them, but they always have the conflict in choosing from doing what society thinks is right or what they believe.

This source is a website filled with different information from 1870s through the 1920s. This showed me how being a maid and getting a divorce back then was an embarrassment. It said those things were considered normal even though it was an embarrassment. It also mentioned that women’s role in society was evolving, but the change was based on the women’s age. And that women believed alcohol was the cause for society having so much problems and because of that women began to fight for rights. And the last thing that I found crazy was that Chinese people were denied entry to the US. They were denied entry because it was assumed that they were prostitutes. They just saw them as sexual objects and nothing more. Those four things meant that the expectations for women were not good, there was differences between the age of women and their limits, most women did not have any rights and they were fighting to try to gain some, and lastly it showed an example of how society limited the female gender. This source relates to my topic today because it shows how far women have gotten from then. This relates to Huck because Jim had no rights because he had a slave and Huck had limits and expectations. For example, he could not be friends with Jim, smoke, not go to school, etc.
Twain, Mark. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. London: Dent, 1955. Print.
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain is a novel that was first published in 1884. There are many versions of this book and annotated versions. Mark Twain wrote this book to show us how society was messed up and twisted up. There were six quotes that really stood out to me. Here are four: "The Widow Douglas she took me for her son, and allowed she would sivilize me; but it was rough living in the house all the time, considering how dismal regular and decent the widow was in all her ways; and so when I couldn’t stand it no longer I lit out. I got into my old rags and my sugar-hogshead again, and was free and satisfied. But Tom Sawyer he hunted me up and said he was going to start a band of robbers, and I might join if I would go back to the widow and be respectable. So I went back”, "It was a close place. I took . . . up [the letter I’d written to Miss Watson], and held it in my hand. I was a-trembling, because I’d got to decide, forever, betwixt two things, and I knowed it. I studied a minute, sort of holding my breath, and then says to myself: “All right then, I’ll go to hell”—and tore it up. It was awful thoughts and awful words, but they was said. And I let them stay said; and never thought no more about reforming”, "But I reckon I got to light out for the territory ahead of the rest, because Aunt Sally she’s going to adopt me and sivilize me, and I can’t stand it. I been there before”, and "It was fifteen minutes before I could work myself up to go and humble myself to a nigger; but I done it, and I warn't ever sorry for it afterwards, neither. I didn't do him no more mean tricks, and I wouldn't done that one if I'd a knowed it would make him feel that way”. Those quotes show the different standards society sets up and categorize everyone. Each quote represents different expectations of society, civilization, hypocrisy, sound heart, etc.
